[Semi O/T] Moneyball NBA-Style

If you have some time to kill and are looking for an interesting read, check out this story in the NY Times by Michael Lewis (of Moneyball fame) on Shane Battier and the application of statistical analysis to the NBA.

Buried somewhere toward the end are a few numbers which explain, I think, in part why betting on NBA games and playing fantasy NBA contests can be so frustrating.

What frustrates me about fantasy hoops - there is no devaluation of player stats.

What I mean by this is that players cannot lose points. No points are taken away for fouls or missed shots.

This makes Iverson a stud, even though on most nights he shoots on the 30-35% range. Also Shaq/D. Howard are not penalized for fouling or shooting 50% from the line.
